Dental Crowns
What is a crown used for?
- covering broken, misshapen, or severly worn teeth
- adding structural support to teeth with large fillings
- hiding miscolored teeth
- hiding dental implants
- supporting a dental bridge
What's the procedure?
During the first visit, the enamel and dentin of the tooth to be crowned are shaved down to a smaller size. The crown can now fit over the remaining tooth structure. The patient is given a temporary tooth while the permanant crown is made in the laboratory. At the second visit, the permanant crown will be placed over the remaining tooth structure. Between the two appointments, placing a crown should take around 1.5 hours.
Dental crowns cost between $500-1000, depending on the type and quantity. They typically last at least 5 years, but you should have them checked regularly.
